Foreign nationals heading toward the Himalayas for a climbing expedition follow a distinct authorization route, separate from standard tourist entry. The India e-Mountaineering Visa grants multiple entries and remains valid for six months from the date the electronic travel authorisation gets issued, giving expedition teams flexibility around shifting departure schedules.

Coordination for every climb runs through the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, which reviews proposed routes and assigns a compulsory liaison officer to accompany the team throughout the expedition. Clearance requests should reach the Foundation at least four months ahead of departure, since review takes time and late submissions risk missing the intended climbing window.

Nationals from China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Bangladesh require additional prior permission beyond the standard process, and any attempt to enter restricted or protected zones needs separate government clearance regardless of expedition purpose. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval, since route conditions and expedition rules remain under ongoing review by coordinating authorities.
